Thomas adds to Kerr momentum

Thomas, who will also be Copperstone mine general manager, was a “key addition to the Kerr Mines executive management team”, the company said this week.

An engineer with more than 30 years’ experience in the industry, Thomas has overseen construction and commissioning of a number of mines including Kupol in Russia for Bema Gold, Fort Knox and Kubaka for Kinross Gold, Kensington and Palmarejo mines for Coeur Mining, Hope Bay for Newmont and Pogo and Red Dog for Cominco.

“On the heels of the successful 2017 exploration program and the positive results of the 2018 preliminary feasibility study, the addition of David to the team provides a catalyst towards the goal of full gold production by the end of 2019,” said Kerr president, Martin Kostuik.

“David’s accomplishments in the areas of engineering, procurement and construction management in the mining industry are second to none. [He] also brings an array of experience to complement his capital project skills including permitting, financing, mine operations and business development.”

Bluestone hits more Cerro Blanco high-grade

The company’s president and CEO, Darren Klinck said the results, including “some of the highest gold and silver grades we have seen since the start of the program”, added weight to the company’s belief that the former Goldcorp-developed underground mine (which didn’t get into production before Goldcorp sold to Bluestone) had a more complex and pervasive vein system than previous resource mapping showed.

“The drilling continues to validate our understanding and confidence in the new geological interpretation of the deposit and will be fundamental to the planned updated resource estimate and engineering studies concurrent with our feasibility study,” Klinck said.

New drill intercepts include 7m of 17.2 grams per tonne gold and 94.9g/t silver, 8.3m of 32.7g/t gold and 79.6g/t silver, 15m of 16.7g/t gold and 105.4g/t silver, and 9.3m of 14.3g/t gold and 68.5g/t silver.

Two of the latest holes were fan holes that intercepted “multiple zones of parallel veins from approximately 15 meters below the South Ramp underground workings”.

Bluestone has 100% of the Cerro Blanco gold and Mita geothermal projects. It expects to complete a feasibility study on the former by the end of this calendar year.

Its earlier preliminary economic assessment had a US$170.8 million investment setting up Cerro Blanco to produce 952,000oz of gold and 3.14Moz of silver over nine years at US$490/oz AISC for gold produced.

Bluestone had a market capitalisation this week of C$83 million, trading at C$1.30. The stock was at 50c in mid-April last year, but touched $1.74 in June.

First production, and a loss, for Northern Vertex in Q1

Northern Vertex poured first gold at Moss in March this year and had an estimated 4,200oz of recoverable gold and 27,000oz of silver on the site’s heap leach pad at the end of April. The junior sees that Moss is eventually capable of yielding 42,000 gold-equivalent ounces a year after further expansion.

The market, however, remains somewhat unimpressed, with Northern Vertex trading around its lowest levels for the past year (at 42c Wednesday). Its high point for the past 12 months was 70c and it started this year near that mark at 68c.

The company’s current market capitalisation is about C$75 million.

It ended the March quarter with cash of $16.96 million ($25 million at the end of June last year), having outlaid capital on construction and commissioning of Moss. It also drew US$6 million of its non-revolving working capital facility with Greenstone Resources, and raised C$2.4 million of equity funding via a non-brokered private placement at C52c a share during the March quarter.

Northern Vertex said Sprott Private Resources Lending LP had agreed, “under certain conditions”, to provide up to US$100 million for “future acquisitions and development projects” that could help transform the company into a mid-range producer.

Oliver has been with the company for 23 years and said he had seen Kinross evolve into one of the leading gold mining companies in the world.

“We have exciting organic opportunities on the horizon and are in a strong financial position to capitalise on promising opportunities,” he said on the company’s microsite dedicated to celebrating the milestone.

Its shares were trading above C$20 10 years ago and slid close to $2 in 2015 during the mining industry downturn.

Over the past year, Kinross shares have ranged between $6.29-$4.44 and last traded at $4.70, capitalising it at $5.87 billion.

Meanwhile, the gold price has pushed back through the $1,300/oz mark since yesterday as uncertainty continues following the Italian elections.

Airline profits this year unlikely at December forecast level: IATA chief

SYDNEY (Reuters) – Profits in the airline industry are unlikely to reach the record levels forecast in December due to a jump in fuel costs, the head of the world’s leading air transport group said on Thursday.

International Air Transport Association (IATA) Chief Executive Alexandre de Juniac said his organization will issue fresh forecasts next week, and that airline profits were still likely to be robust.

The December projections were based on oil at $60 per barrel, Juniac said. Brent crude LCOc1 is currently over $77 per barrel, having risen roughly 15 percent so far this year.

“We are probably at the peak of the (profit) cycle. Next year we don’t know yet but probably less positive,” Juniac said at a media event ahead of the organization’s annual meeting starting on Sunday.

Airline operators such as Singapore Airlines Ltd (SIAL.SI) and Malaysia’s AirAsia Group Bhd (AIRA.KL) posted strong profits in the latest quarter ended March amid a tourism boom in the region.

In December, IATA predicted a record $38.4 billion net profit for the airline industry in 2018, with $27.9 billion coming from U.S. and European airlines. IATA represents some 280 airlines comprising 83 percent of global air traffic.

Juniac said higher fuel prices had not yet been passed on in fares and that infrastructure and labor costs as well as taxes were rising.
